Pierre Baptiste ARLOT, un de mes arriÚres grand-pÚres, était soldat pendant la premiÚre guerre mondiale. Il est mort au front pendant la bataille de la Somme. Ceci est son dernier jour.
Pierre Baptiste ARLOT, est né le 29/08/1877 a Usson-du-Poitou dans la Vienne de Pierre ARLOT et Françoise BRUGIER, seulement 19 ans au moment de sa naissance. Pendant son enfance ou son adolescence, ses parents viennent s'installer a Saint-Coutant, dans le nord-est de la Charente.
Il s'y marie le 26/11/1902 avec Marie (dite Maria) PIGNOUX, fille de Pierre PIGNOUX et Marie ENIXON. Les parents de Pierre Baptiste Ă©tant morts depuis deux ans, c'est sa grand-mĂšre, Marie Anne BRUGIER qui donne son consentement pour son mariage par courrier. A lâĂ©poque de son mariage, il est cultivateur propriĂ©taire a Saint-Coutant.
Pierre Baptiste est grenadier au 338eme rĂ©giment d'infanterie, classe de 1897. En novembre 1916, son rĂ©giment prend part a la bataille de la Somme comme beaucoup de soldats de lâĂ©poque, y compris mes autres arriĂšres grands-pĂšres.
Le 12 novembre, le 338eme RI est chargé de défendre Pressoire. Le Lt Colonel en charge du 338eme RI établit son PC a Vermandovillers, juste a coté de Pressoire. Le régiment se met en position sous le bombardement violent de l'ennemi.
Le 13 novembre, le reste de la 123eme Brigade finit de se mettre en position, toujours sous les bombardements des allemands qui a un moment ont semblé se masser pour un assaut, ce qui a déclenché le bombardement de la part de l'artillerie française.
Le 14 novembre, les bombardements violents de l'ennemi continuent.
Le 15 novembre a 2h, un dĂ©serteur allemand annonce une attaque pour 7h (6h heure française). A 6h, l'attaque se produit aprĂšs un bombardement violent, y compris de nombreux lacrymogĂšnes sur lâarriĂšre. Le Commandant Pied de Lestrade tĂ©lĂ©phone que les allemands sont entrĂ©s dans Pressoire a 7h. A 8h40, la Compagnie ClĂ©ment se rabat vers l'ouest "aprĂšs sâĂȘtre Ă©nergiquement dĂ©fendue" pendant que la Compagnie Theillout tient toujours vers le point 4976.
La contre-attaque s'organise par le nord avec les Compagnies 23, 13, et 14 suivant un barrage d'artillerie. A 16h10, Le Commandant Phelippon téléphone qu'il progresse sur Pressoire par le sud et réclame des sacs a terre.
Vers 17h, les allemands arrivent presque a lâĂ©glise de Pressoire et montent une attaque sur Ablaincourt qui est stoppĂ©e par l'artillerie française.
A 17h15, un ordre de bataille prescrit une contre-attaque sur Pressoire pour reprendre le terrain perdu. A 23h, l'attaque est déclenchée, précédée d'un violent tir sur Pressoire.
A 3h30 le 16 novembre, le Lt Colonel Reynaud fait savoir qu'il progresse sans grandes pertes. Les gains du 7 novembre sont repris.
Des le matin et pendant la journée, le Btn Phelippon subit de "vigoureuses attaques, avec jets de flammes" qui ont toutes été repoussées.
Du 16 au 17, des renforts arrivent mais les bombardements occasionnent de nombreuses pertes.
Du 17 au 20 novembre, "rien a signaler".
Pierre Baptiste est mort pendant les combats de Pressoire le 15/11/1916.

Pierre Baptiste's parents having died two years before, it was his grandmother Marie Anne BRUGIER who gave her consent for his marriage by letter. At the time of his marriage he was a farming landowner in Saint-Coutant.
Pierre Baptiste was a grenadier in the 338th infantry regiment, 1897 class. In November 1916, his regiment took part in the Battle of the Somme, as did many soldiers of the time, including my other great-great-grandfathers.

On 13 November, the rest of the 123rd Brigade finished taking up its positions, still under German bombardment which at one point seemed to be massing for an assault, triggering retaliatory fire from the French artillery.
On 14 November, heavy enemy bombardment continued.

On 15 November at 2 a.m., a German deserter announced an attack for 7 a.m. (6 a.m. French time). At 6 a.m. the attack began after heavy bombardment, including numerous gas shells on the rear. Commandant Pied de Lestrade telephoned that the Germans had entered Pressoire at 7 a.m. At 8:40, the Clément Company fell back westwards "after putting up an energetic defence" while the Theillout Company still held around point 4976.
A counter-attack was organised to the north by Companies 23, 13 and 14 following an artillery barrage. At 16:10, Commandant Phelippon telephoned that he was advancing on Pressoire from the south and called for sandbags.
Around 17:00, the Germans came almost as far as the church at Pressoire and launched an attack on Ablaincourt that was stopped by French artillery.
At 17:15, a battle order prescribed a counter-attack on Pressoire to retake lost ground. At 23:00, the attack was launched, preceded by a violent barrage on Pressoire.
