A Noel 2010, Melanie et moi avons déménagé d'Aberdeen vers Messeux. Récemment, en faisant des recherches pour mon arbre, j'ai découvert des cousinages dans ce village du nord de la Charente.
Notre installation a Messeux a Ă©tĂ© in complet hasard: je ne connais pas de famille la-bas (les RAGUENAUD sont historiquement installes entre AngoulĂȘme et Cognac), et je ne connaissais rien de ma famille du cĂŽtĂ©Â des ARLOT.
En 2012, a l'occasion d'une visite de mes parents, j'ai appris que mon grand-pĂšre maternel disait ĂȘtre de Champagne-Mouton, 6km a l'est de notre village, On a donc dĂ©cidĂ© de jeter un Ćil au monument aux morts et au cimetiĂšre pour trouver les noms de ses parents, mais sans succĂšs. Il ne devait pas ĂȘtre d'ici. Tant qu'a etre dans le coin, on est allĂ© voir St-Coutant, quelques km a l'est, ou ma mĂšre venait en vacances lâĂ©tĂ© quand son pĂšre aidait aux champs. Et la surprise, le cimetiĂšre de St-Coutant contient la tombe de mon arriĂšre grand-mĂšre Marie PIGNOUX (aka Maria). Mon grand-pĂšre venait donc surement de St-Coutant et non de Champagne-Mouton.
3 ans plus tard, aprÚs avoir commencé des recherches généalogiques du cÎté des RAGUENAUD, j'entreprends aussi celui des ARLOT. Sachant que mon grand-pÚre était probablement né vers St-Coutant, je commence mes recherches la et découvre son pÚre, Pierre Baptiste ARLOT. Un peu plus de travail et je trouve mon arriÚre grand-mÚre et leur mariage a St-Coutant le 26/11/1902.
Je continue mes recherches du cÎté des ARLOT dans le sud de la Vienne, et des ENIXON et PIGNOUX dans le nord-est de la Charente jusqu'à avoir un arbre assez complet de tous mes ascendants directs dans toutes les branches.
Satisfait de mon progrĂšs vers le haut, je dĂ©cide par curiositĂ© de descendre le long des lignes des frĂšres et sĆurs pour voir les cousinages Ă©ventuels. Au dĂ©tour d'un mariage, je repĂšre un nom connu: PANTIER. Je connais ce nom parce que les PANTIER sont indigĂšnes a Messeux et notre maire de lâĂ©poque, Francine NICOLEAU en est une cousine par sa mĂšre. Je me dis que le nom Ă©tant assez rare, il se pourrait qu'il y a un lien distant.
Je creuse un peu plus, et j'arrive a descendre le long des PANTIER jusqu'Ă la fin du XIXĂšme siĂšcle. Pas de lien apparent avec les NICOLEAU, mais les donnĂ©es des AD sâarrĂȘtant en 1902, je ne peux pas chercher plus loin.
Trouvant l'histoire amusante, je fais part de mes trouvailles a Francine par email, qui me répond tout de suite que Maxime PANTIER était son grand-pÚre et qu'elle connait la suite de la descendance jusqu'à elle. Je viens donc de potentiellement découvrir une cousine.
Il y a cependant une zone incertaine a rĂ©soudre: Les PANTIER descendent d'une Jeanne CHAINLAUD nĂ©e en 1790 alors que je descends d'une Jeanne CHAINLAUD nĂ©e en 1785. Le lieu de naissance est le mĂȘme (Vieux-Ruffec) et le nom des parents et des tĂ©moins diffĂ©rents. Je vĂ©rifie mes actes de naissance et de mariage, et je dĂ©couvre que ma Jeanne a en fait étĂ©Â baptisĂ©e Marie, mais s'est faite appeler Marie, Jeanne, et Marie-Jeanne au cours de sa vie. Tout pointe vers deux sĆurs ayant utilisĂ©Â le mĂȘme prĂ©nom, mais nĂ©es a 5 ans d'intervalle. Je vĂ©rifie auprĂšs de Jean Vriet, un gĂ©nĂ©alogiste nĂ© a St-Coutant, mon cousin au 3eme degrĂ© aussi dĂ©couvert au cours de recherches gĂ©nĂ©alogiques, et il me confirme que les parents sont bien les mĂȘmes (leur mĂšre ayant aussi utilisĂ© plusieurs prĂ©noms dans sa vie).

At Christmas 2010, Melanie and I moved from Aberdeen to Messeux. Recently, while doing research for my tree, I discovered family connections in this village in northern Charente.
Our move to Messeux was entirely by chance: I had no family there (the RAGUENAUDs have historically been settled between AngoulĂȘme and Cognac), and I knew nothing of my family on the ARLOT side.
In 2012, during a visit from my parents, I learned that my maternal grandfather said he was from Champagne-Mouton, 6 km east of our village. We decided to look at the war memorial and the cemetery to find the names of his parents â but without success. He probably wasn't from there after all. Since we were in the area, we went to see Saint-Coutant, a few kilometres further east, where my mother used to spend summer holidays when her father helped with the harvest. And what a surprise: the cemetery of Saint-Coutant contains the grave of my great-grandmother Marie PIGNOUX (known as Maria). My grandfather must therefore have come from Saint-Coutant, not Champagne-Mouton.
Three years later, having started genealogical research on the RAGUENAUD side, I also began on the ARLOT side. Knowing that my grandfather was probably born around Saint-Coutant, I started there and found his father, Pierre Baptiste ARLOT. A little more work and I found my great-grandmother and their marriage in Saint-Coutant on 26/11/1902.

I continued my research on the ARLOT side in southern Vienne, and on the ENIXON and PIGNOUX families in north-east Charente, until I had a fairly complete tree of all my direct ancestors across all branches.
Satisfied with my upward progress, I decided out of curiosity to trace down the lines of brothers and sisters to look for possible cousinhoods. While looking at a marriage record, I spotted a familiar name: PANTIER. I knew this name because the PANTIERs are native to Messeux, and our mayor at the time, Francine NICOLEAU, was a cousin on her mother's side. I thought that since the name was fairly rare, there might be a distant connection.
I dug a little further and managed to trace the PANTIER line down to the end of the 19th century. No apparent link to the NICOLEAUs, but the departmental archives stop at 1902, so I could not search further.

Finding the story amusing, I shared my discovery with Francine by email. She replied immediately that Maxime PANTIER was her grandfather and that she knows the descent from him down to herself. I had therefore potentially just discovered a cousin.
However, there is one uncertain area to resolve: the PANTIERs descend from a Jeanne CHAINLAUD born in 1790, whereas I descend from a Jeanne CHAINLAUD born in 1785.
