Comme je le disais il y a peu, quand les familles voyagent, ça complique les choses pour les gĂ©nĂ©alogistes familiaux. Trouver d'ou vient une famille ou ils sont allĂ©s est parfois presque impossible. La migration de la Creuse vers la Charente d'une branche de ma famille m'a posĂ©Â des problĂšmes dans le passĂ©. Mais ce n'est rien comparĂ© a la famille de ma femme. Ses ancĂȘtres poussent l'art de migrer et de disparaĂźtre au niveau d'art.
Tout commence quand au détour des registres et des recensements, une famille disparaßt d'Ecosse. William H STOBBIE est né a Heriot, prÚs d'Edimbourg, en Ecosse, le 10/09/1858. Il est le fils de Robert Henry STOBBIE (né a Edimbourg) et Elizabeth TYRELL (née en Irlande).
Dans les recensements de 1861 et 1871, William vit toujours autour d'Edimbourg avec ses parents. En 1884, il se marie avec Martha HORNE, née le 25/08/1860 a Penicuik, de John HORNE et Martha BROWN.
Dans le recensement de 1891, la famille est arrivĂ©e a Leuchars, toujours en Ecosse. Mais elle nâapparaĂźt pas dans le recensement de 1901 dans les lieux habituels. De toute Ă©vidence la famille s'est dĂ©placĂ©e. Mais je ne trouve aucune trace d'eux en Ecosse.
Par contre, au détour d'un post de blog qui explique qu'au XIXÚme, les bateaux trans-atlantiques devaient déclarer leurs passagers, je trouve leur trace en train de traverser l'Atlantique de Glasgow a Boston le 17/08/1892 sur le Scandinavian.

La famille apparaĂźt ensuite de nouveau dans les recensements amĂ©ricains de lâĂtat du Maine, USA, a Winslow, Kennebec. Je les y trouve en 1900 et 1910 dans les recensements.

En 1916, William meurt a Winslow, laissant Martha seule. En 1916 tous les enfants, mĂȘme Florence la plus jeune, sont mariĂ©s et ont quittĂ©Â le nid parental. Martha meurt a son tour en 1940, toujours a Winslow.
Cette histoire n'est pas une exception. Dans les 5 ou 6 branches les plus directes des ancĂȘtres de ma femme, les familles ont fini au Canada, aux US, en Australie, en Nouvelle ZĂ©lande, en Tasmanie, et en Angleterre.

But that is nothing compared to my wife's family â her ancestors have raised the art of migrating and disappearing to a fine art.

In the 1891 census, the family had moved to Leuchars, still in Scotland. But they do not appear in the 1901 census in their usual haunts. The family had evidently moved â but I can find no trace of them anywhere in Scotland.
However, while reading a blog post explaining that in the 19th century transatlantic steamships had to declare their passengers, I found their trace crossing the Atlantic from Glasgow to Boston on 17/08/1892 aboard the Scandinavian.

The family next appears in the American censuses of the State of Maine, USA, in Winslow, Kennebec. I find them there in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

In 1916, William died in Winslow, leaving Martha alone. By 1916 all the children, even Florence the youngest, were married and had left the family home. Martha died in turn in 1940, still in Winslow.
This story is no exception. Across the 5 or 6 most direct branches of my wife's ancestors, the families ended up in Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and England.
